As a global leader in mobile-based survey research, GeoPoll uses multiple mobile modes to collect data directly from respondents. Each mode has its best use cases, and GeoPoll’s platform supports ten different research modes to fulfill specific project needs. Each of these modes can be used independently or in combination, and GeoPoll’s team can work with clients to design custom solutions for their projects.

SMS-Survey

In this article, we go through each GeoPoll mobile survey mode, in summary, highlighting their best use cases and benefits.

Short Message Service (SMS/ text message)

SMS surveys are self-administered surveys sent to respondents one question at a time (see an example here). SMS surveys do not require respondents to have internet connectivity or airtime credit, and the survey invitation is received even if the phone is turned off or out of service range when sent. Respondents can also answer the questions at their leisure, ensuring privacy when taking surveys with sensitive questions.

Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI)

CATI surveys are administered through experienced call center interviewers based in the country they are calling. GeoPoll interviewers undergo rigorous training for each project they administer and are overseen by dedicated in-market call center supervisors and GeoPoll’s senior team. GeoPoll’s proprietary mobile application for CATI interviewers facilitates interviewer flow, data collection, and interviewer oversight and can be utilized on any smartphone or tablet. Features of our CATI Application include offline mode, call recording, multi-lingual support, and more.

Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI)

Built on the same system as GeoPoll’s CATI application, GeoPoll’s CAPI application facilitates face-to-face data collection in the field, removing the need for paper questionnaires and manual data collation. The CAPI application does not require interviewers to have internet access when conducting surveys and provides interviewer metrics for overseeing projects.

Interactive Voice Response (IVR)

IVR is a self-administered survey method in which pre-recorded voice surveys are initiated via phone call, and respondents key in answers on their dial-pad. IVR is useful for reaching illiterate populations through voice calls without training call center interviewers and can therefore send a mass amount of surveys at once through automated software.

Mobile Web

Mobile Web surveys are self-administered surveys requiring respondents to have internet-capable phones with an active WiFi or data connection. Respondents are sent an initial SMS message with a link to a survey, which drives respondents to their web browser to complete the survey. Mobile web surveys support GPS location, video/picture questions, and matrix/ table/ grid format questions.

Mobile Application

Mobile app surveys require a smartphone, although the mobile application does allow for offline use. Respondents who download the GeoPoll mobile application are sent notifications to participate in surveys through GeoPoll’s mobile app. The mobile app includes, with respondent consent, additional capabilities such as GPS location, picture taking, and passive data collection.

Focus Groups

GeoPoll can implement focus group research through mobile chat groups overseen by an experienced moderator. Focus groups allow for sharing video and picture content, structured discussions, and other tasks and can be maintained over a more extended time than in-person groups.

WhatsApp Mode

WhatsApp is GeoPoll’s latest survey mode and one of the most robust owing to WhatsApp’s reach, affordability, and ability to conduct rich media surveys within an environment most respondents are familiar with. Surveys on WhatsApp can be longer and more complex than SMS, and we can use audio and visual stimuli, meaning we can send picture or video content for respondents to answer questions about and even get photos and recordings back from respondents.

Advertising has come a long way, but the objective has remained the same – reach an audience and appeal to it to procure a product or service. What has evolved continuously are the audience’s tastes and preferences and the mediums through which brands and organizations can reach them.

To shed more light on consumers’ tastes and the channels they can be reached through, GeoPoll ran a Rapid App survey in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda between the 10th and 15th of December 2020, with a sample size of 999. This report summarizes the findings on topics such as the most popular media channels, media consumption changes, trust in advertisements, the prevalence of online channels, and the most effective types of advertisements.

Most popular media channels in Africa

GeoPoll’s study found that the internet (social media and other websites) and TV are the most consumed media channels by respondents in this study. Fifty-five percent of the respondents said they access online media channels every day. In contrast, 23% said they watch TV daily. Sixteen percent said radio was their go-to channel, and only 5% said they read newspapers and print media every day. This differed from country to country and between genders. For example, females in Ghana said they prefer TV (45%) over social media (20%), compared to males (24% for TV and 39% for social media). In Tanzania, on the other hand, females preferred social media (56%) over TV (just 4%) while males were relatively even with 33% picking social media over TV (26%).

GeoPoll’s study found that the internet (social media and other websites) and TV are the most consumed media channels

To gauge how media preferences are changing, we examined how much more or less of each channel the respondents were consuming in the last 12 months, compared to the previous year. A large majority (72%) reported that they are using social media more than they did a year ago. TV also had an upsurge in viewership, as discovered in recent GeoPoll Audience Measurement reports, with 54% saying they are watching more television, which was in direct contrast to print, which over half of the respondents (54%) said they are reading less of compared to last year.

Trust levels in Advertising

The influence of a media channel depends, to a great extent, on if its audience can trust it, especially so for advertising. In the survey, we asked the respondents which media channel they trusted advertisements on the most. TV was cited as the most trusted by almost half of the respondents (46%). The internet and radio followed with 30% and 12% trust levels, respectively.

Overall, asked about which of traditional channels or modern channels they find more trustworthy, the respondents were split almost evenly, with 43% trusting online advertising over traditional media (41%). Seventeen percent said both are about the same. 85% of the respondents have purchased a product or service after coming across an advertisement.

Internet Usage and Online Advertising

Given how popular the internet has become and how influential it has become in marketing, we asked the respondents about their frequency of using the internet. In a week, a vast majority (80% said they access the internet every day. Over 65% said they access the internet at least four hours every day, pointing to a growing number of eyeballs on online channels addressable by online advertising. For context, it should be noted that the audience was online-only as the survey was conducted on the GeoPoll App.

Internet usage: In a week, a vast majority (80% said they access the internet every day.

Indeed, consumers find online advertisements influential. When we asked, “do you find online advertisements influential to your purchase decisions?”, 95% said they find them compelling either to a great or to some extent.

Having established the popularity of online channels over other channels, the next question becomes which specific online channel is most popular. As we have found out in other surveys we have conducted across Africa, Facebook was the most popular in all the countries we surveyed, by a big margin, with 45% choosing Facebook as the favorite channel. Overall, YouTube was second with 15%, followed by Twitter at 14%. However, the order varies when we look at the findings by country.

The Most Effective Advertisements

Many factors go into an advertisement. Channel selection, which we have already looked at, is as important as the message, the design, and the target audience, among other factors. The GeoPoll survey also sought to know what ad elements are most influential from a selection we provided. The offer (price) was the most crucial element (28%), followed by relevance to the person seeing the advert (24%) and access (convenient availability of the product, at 19%). So, it is essential to pay attention to the price and discount being offered, audience targeting options, and how the product will reach the buyers if you are an advertiser.

most effective advertisement typesFinally, the survey sought to establish the type of adverts that customers find most enjoyable; hence the advertisements advertisers need to create most. In a society that craves reality, lifestyle images and videos of real people such as influencers were the most popular, as well as creatively designed banners.

About this GeoPoll Survey

This Rapid Survey was run via the GeoPoll mobile application between the 10th and 15th of December 2020 in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The sample size was 999, composed of random App users between ages 18 and 64. Since the survey was randomly distributed, the results are slightly skewed towards younger, male respondents.

GeoPoll offers phone airtime, mobile money, and other incentives to thank you for your participation in our surveys and other tasks. In this article, we look at the two main ways GeoPoll disburses rewards to users.

Earn rewards with GeoPoll

Redeemable GeoPoll Credit

When you complete tasks on the GeoPoll App, you accumulate credit, which you can redeem when you reach a certain threshold which depends on your country. You can earn GeoPoll Credit by completing paid surveys (paid surveys show a credit amount), other tasks, and inviting friends to GeoPoll.

Did you know that you now earn a small token if you cannot complete some surveys due to ineligibility?

rewards and credit history GeoPoll

Notes:

  • GeoPoll Credit mostly loads immediately after your survey response has been submitted and approved. It, however, may take up to 48 hours for GeoPoll credit to be reflected in the ‘Earnings’ page. You can reach out to GeoPoll support if it takes longer.
  • You may redeem your GeoPoll credit at any time after hitting the minimum threshold – which varies from country to country. Simply click “Redeem” to see options available in your country.
  • To see your GeoPoll credit accumulation history, click on the history button at the top of every page – You may also navigate to earnings by clicking the $ sign at the bottom of every page to go to the ‘Earnings’ page.

Learn more: How to redeem your GeoPoll Credit.

Instant Airtime

For top up surveys sent via SMS – mobile links and SMS-response surveys – you receive your incentive as airtime upon completing your survey to the phone number you received the survey on. If you don’t qualify for a survey, you will receive a message stating that you are ineligible and won’t get credit for that survey, but will have future chances to complete surveys for credit! You must complete all questions and reach the end of the survey to get your airtime credit.

Notes:

  • Sometimes, due to issues with network providers, your airtime may take up to 72 hours to receive. Contact support if your airtime takes longer.
  • To receive a direct airtime top-up, you will need to be a pre-paid subscriber
  • Register for GeoPoll SMS and mobile weblink surveys by entering your phone number here. If you already have the GeoPoll App, you are eligible to receive SMS surveys.

geopoll app vs sms

“Please send me more surveys on SMS.”

“I am getting more surveys on SMS than the App.”

“I used to receive more surveys on SMS than I am now.”

A common question we receive from our community members is if there are channels we prefer for surveys over others – such as SMS vs the GeoPoll Application. In this post, we will debunk this.

The simple answer is the survey method is dependent on the research project itself. GeoPoll and our clients will choose the method that is most suitable for the survey itself, the target audience, and other factors.

Let’s dive in some more, shall we?

GeoPoll runs surveys through several channels, including SMS, mobile web, app, voice calls, and messaging apps, among others. Choosing one or more of these for a survey or series of surveys is a well-thought-through process. Choosing who will receive each survey is a combination of targeting and random selection: In addition to basing survey selection on certain criteria such as your age, gender, and location, even those who meet the criteria for a survey will not necessarily be chosen. In order to maintain the integrity of our research, we must distribute surveys randomly to our userbase.

GeoPoll does not necessarily select users to be specifically receiving SMS surveys and others to receive, say, App surveys. But by making yourself a GeoPoll user on multiple channels – say SMS and the GeoPoll App, you are more likely to get selected for a survey.

For example, a survey that has images will not work on SMS. So, we will send it randomly to people who have the App, or through a mobile web link. In the same way, certain surveys can be comfortably taken on SMS, Mobile Web, AND the App – in which case we will choose one, or all methods as necessary.

So, which one is better?

Each method has its advantages. SMS and mobile web give you an immediate payment while the App lets you build your credit, which you can then redeem for a higher payout. You don’t need an Internet connection to take SMS surveys, while the App gives you access to more survey types, and often has more surveys available for you to take.

Our advice:

Download the GeoPoll App and register your profile. You will have access to most survey types and other tasks that cannot be done on SMS… along with other fun and paid activities. Also, when you register your profile on the App, you are eligible to get included in all the other channels, including SMS. You win-win-win!
