AI-Moderated Voice Surveys: CATI quality at a fraction of the time and cost.

GeoPoll’s AI moderator runs natural voice interviews with your respondents on WhatsApp, returning verbatim transcripts, structured responses, and real-time dashboards as the interviews happen. The format runs at scale across 100+ languages, reaches respondents in their own channel, and closes fieldwork in days.

A trained moderator. Available 24/7. Anywhere in the World

AI-moderated voice surveys replace the human enumerator with an AI that conducts the interview by voice over WhatsApp. The AI introduces itself, asks the questions, listens, probes when answers are vague, and moves through the questionnaire at the respondent’s pace.

The respondent hears a natural-sounding voice. They reply by speaking, just like any phone call. The AI transcribes, codes, and stores the response in real time, ready for analysis the moment the call ends.

What this means in practice:

Built for the work you already do.

Commercial research

For brands and agencies that need real consumer voice without the cost or wait of traditional CATI.

Use it for concept testing, post-purchase feedback, brand perception studies, U&A, and qualitative diary studies that scale.

A FMCG client running a hair care launch runs 800 voice interviews across Kenya, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire in five days. Verbatims are analysable the same week.

Development and humanitarian

For NGOs, foundations, and multilaterals running monitoring, evaluation, and beneficiary feedback in hard-to-reach populations.

Use it for outcome monitoring, post-distribution checks, programme satisfaction, accountability to affected populations, and rapid needs assessments.

An international development agency uses AI voice surveys to reach communities in the DRC during an Ebola response.

Public sector and research institutions

For governments, universities, and policy research bodies needing representative voice data at speed.

Use it for citizen feedback, public service satisfaction, policy testing, and longitudinal panels with low attrition.

A national statistics office uses the format to test public response to a new social protection scheme across three regions in under a week.

Why GeoPoll built it this way.

WhatsApp-native

Respondents already have WhatsApp on their phone. There is nothing to download, no link to click, no portal to log into. The AI calls them through the app they already use every day, which means higher answer rates and lower drop-off.

Voice, not text

Voice captures tone, hesitation, and nuance that text cannot. It also works for respondents with low literacy, which matters in many of the markets we operate in. Open-ended answers come back richer and more useful.

Consistent moderation

Every respondent hears the same prompt, in the same tone, in the same order. There is no variation across enumerators, no fatigue at hour seven of a shift, no skipped probes. The moderation is identical from interview one to interview one thousand.

Real-time data

Transcripts, structured responses, sentiment tags, and audio files are available as the interviews happen. Dashboards update live. You do not wait for fieldwork to close to see what is coming back.

Multilingual by default

The AI moderator runs in English, Swahili, French, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Hausa, Yoruba, Amharic, and more than 90 other languages. Respondents are greeted in their preferred language and the survey adapts.

From questionnaire to clean data, in four steps.

01

Design the questionnaire

You provide the questions in our standard format. We handle the AI scripting, voice tuning, and language adaptation.

02

Configure the panel

We sample from GeoPoll’s existing panels or bring your own respondent list. Quotas, weighting, and exclusion criteria are set up in advance.

03

The AI runs fieldwork

Respondents receive a WhatsApp message inviting them to a voice survey. The AI moderator conducts the interview, handles probes, and closes the call.

04

You receive the data

Transcripts, structured responses, audio files, and dashboards are delivered as the interviews complete. Final analysis is ready within days of fielding.

What this changes for your team.

Faster fieldwork

What used to take three weeks closes in three to five days. Decisions land in the same quarter as the brief.

Lower cost per complete

No call centre overhead, no enumerator training, no transport stipends. The same budget reaches more respondents in more markets.

Consistent quality

The moderator never has a bad day. Probes fire when they should. Skip logic is followed exactly.

Reach beyond cities

WhatsApp works on basic smartphones and low-bandwidth networks. The format reaches respondents that online panels miss.

Audit trail by default

Every interview produces an audio file and a verbatim transcript. Findings are defensible, and you can re-listen to any response.

Languages your team doesn't speak

You don’t need a Swahili-speaking analyst to run a Swahili study. Translation and transcription are built in.

Honest answers.

It sounds clearly like an AI, not a human pretending to be one. We made that choice deliberately. Respondents are told upfront they are speaking with an AI moderator, which builds trust and reduces drop-off. The voice itself is conversational, paces well, and handles natural speech, but we don’t pretend it’s a person.

We can fall back to SMS-led recruitment or traditional CATI for that respondent. Most of our markets have very high WhatsApp penetration, but we never assume 100% reach.

Consent is captured before the voice call begins, via a text-based confirmation step. Respondents know they are speaking with an AI, what the data will be used for, and that they can stop at any time. We are GDPR-compliant and follow research standards on AI moderation.

Open-ended responses are captured as both verbatim transcripts and audio files. You can re-listen to any response, which is something traditional CATI rarely offers. Sentiment and topic coding are applied automatically but can be reviewed manually.

Voice is the format that works best for low-literacy respondents because they don’t have to read or type anything. The AI moderator speaks at a measured pace, repeats questions when asked, and handles regional accents and code-switching.

English, Swahili, French, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Amharic, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Zulu, Somali, Wolof, and many more. Over 100 languages in total. If a language you need isn’t on the list, we can usually add it within a few weeks.

It depends on sample size, market, and questionnaire length, but the format is significantly cheaper than traditional CATI in most cases. Reach out and we can give you an indicative quote within a working day.

A typical project runs five to ten working days from kickoff to clean dataset. Rush projects can complete in three days.

Yes. We work with both our own panels and client-supplied respondent lists. We also handle hybrid samples where part of the audience comes from us and part from you.

We test the moderator for bias in tone, follow-up behaviour, and response coding before any project goes live. Bias testing is documented and shared with clients on request. We also run human review samples on every project to catch issues the automated checks miss.

Yes. Clients can stream live calls during fieldwork and review transcripts as they come in. We also run weekly check-ins on longer projects.

Audio files and transcripts are retained for the agreed project lifecycle and then deleted, or returned to the client, depending on your data agreement. We do not use respondent data to train other models.

Who we work with.

GeoPoll has run mobile-based research across more than 120 markets for clients including UN agencies, global FMCG brands, foundations, government ministries, and development partners. AI-moderated voice surveys are the newest addition to the toolkit, built on more than a decade of mobile research infrastructure.

See it work in five minutes.

The fastest way to understand AI-moderated voice surveys is to take one. Our live demo walks you through the screener and then connects you to the AI moderator on WhatsApp. It takes about five minutes.
