Survey Evaluating Project “Nyumba ni Choo”
Project “Nyumba ni Choo” is implemented by Project CLEAR, an organization working to enhance the effectiveness of development efforts in Tanzania. The project specifically aims to improve handwashing and sanitation across Tanzania, with a focus on the fight against coronavirus. It is funded in part by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID).
As part of the project, a survey is conducted as part of a research effort whose purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of an awareness campaign called “Mikono Safi, Tanzania Salama” (“Clean Hands, Tanzania Safe” in Swahili), and conducted by the project. The campaign was implemented in 2020 in Tanzania for the purpose of increasing handwashing in the face of COVID-19. The survey is conducted by the specialized firm Geopoll, and a sample of around 1000 respondents are expected to participate. As part of the research effort, the survey includes six experiments where respondents randomly receive questions that are slightly different, so that the effects of these differences in questions can be assessed. These experiments pertain to the effectiveness of awareness strategies, and the conditions for the spread of false information.
It takes about 15 minutes to respond to the entire survey, and all is done by text, so participation presents no risk to the respondent during or after the survey. To answer questions, respondents send their responses by text, free of telecom charge to them. Responses are kept entirely confidential, and they are de-identified so that the respondent’s answers cannot be tied to their identity. Participation is entirely voluntary, and only respondents who consent by replying that they opt into taking the survey receive the questions. Respondents can stop at any time during the survey by sending ‘STOP’, in which case they immediately stop receiving the survey texts. No benefits to which participants are otherwise entitled are tied to taking the survey, or to completing it. Top-up is made available to participants who complete the survey, and is sent automatically to their phone numbers within two days. All Tanzanians selected into the sample are eligible to participate in the survey as long as they are aged 18 or above, live in mainland Tanzania, and know about coronavirus.
In case of questions about the research or the survey, or if there are any doubts about the comprehension of survey participation, respondents can contact Project CLEAR (projectclear.com/contact, or [email protected]) and Geopoll (geopoll.com/community). If you have any questions regarding your rights as a participant in the study, you may contact Solutions IRB (the body that oversees our protection of study participants) at +18552264472 or [email protected].
Relevant research findings will be disseminated by Project CLEAR, including on the website projectclear.com.
