The Media landscape in Africa has been evolving over time. This evolution has seen the explosion of traditional and new media even as the media and audiences become further fragmented due to new technological advancements in the broadcast spectrum.

In Africa, where Radio and TV are still kings, the growth of a variety of channels on Radio has seen the rise of community radio that has curated content based on the various indigenous languages spoken across Africa. Although the growth in TV ownership has not been as rapid than that of Radio, there is still a significant growth even as the content becomes diverse and localized.

GeoPoll’s Audience Measurement Service provides daily ratings that track audience behavior for the media landscape in 11 countries across Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. For Quarter One 2018, we are pleased to provide high-level media insights that offer a better understanding of the TV and Radio audience in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and Rwanda by focusing on the following aspects of audience measurement:

With the general lack of precise, granular media audience measurement data in most African markets, media buying has tended to adopt a “scatter-gun” approach. Brands and agencies hedge their bets in their advertising expenditure, distributing their ad spend across a variety of channels and timeslots to ensure that their target market is adequately reached with advertising. This should not be happening in a digital age.

Without the measurement and data infrastructure to enable this accountability, global clients’ African media budgets often do not get the investment they deserve. A lot of ad spend is wasted, either because it is reaching the wrong target audience, or it is reaching the right audience but less cost effective than it should be. It has previously been very difficult to monitor the return on investment of ad spend as there has not been a  consistent, objective way of tracking campaign reach and frequency.  Until Now!!!

The GeoPoll Media Measurement service has been examining ratings and audience share for the top stations in  Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Afghanistan to provide media insights into markets where data is scarce. You no longer need to bet on which media channel is most effective for your advertising expenditure.

GeoPoll’s overnight media ratings deliver daily insights on audience measurement data for TV, Radio, and Print.

Sports betting in Kenya has become one of the most lucrative new businesses in a new gambling craze that is earning the country a new title; ‘The Betting Nation’.

According to  Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), there are close to 30 licensed sports betting companies Kenya with SportPesa touted as the largest and most popular.

Just how popular is it?

There has previously been no hard data to support the claim that SportPesa is the largest with many only speculating on just how much time Kenyans are spending on the betting sites in comparison to other popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

As part of Kantar-GeoPoll Media Measurement‘s daily surveys on audience habits for TV, radio, print and Internet, GeoPoll is pleased to release this report on the top 10 websites in the month of September 2016. To learn more about KGMM, see a demo of the system, and sign up for an account please contact us

Top_Internet_sites.png

Facebook Still King, SportPesa ranked No. 8

Although Facebook continues to be the most frequented website by Kenyans with a total of 15M indicating that they visited the site in the month of September, SportPesa was the 8th most visited website with a total of 1.5M visits.   Whatsapp and Opera Mini were among the top five though they are platforms and not strictly websites.

Women in Sports Betting
Sports  betting is believed to be a preserve of menfolk, however, according to our survey, a total of 498,000 women indicated that they have visited the sports betting site within the last month. This is in comparison to over 900,000 men who included SportPesa among their sites they had visited in the same period.

Sports betting is slowly becoming the new past time for a number Kenyans with those aged between 25-34 years showing the most interest. In our next report, we will be sharing the rankings for all sports betting companies in Kenya.
